Google Gemini App Gets Google Photos Integration

Google’s Gemini app for Android has received a significant update, integrating Google Photos and allowing users to search for images and videos using voice commands.

The integration enables users to search for memories using specific criteria such as date, time, description, location, and people within the Gemini app. To use this feature, users need to enable the Google Photos app by navigating to the profile menu on the top right corner of the Gemini app, tapping Apps, and then enabling the Google Photos app (extension). This allows Gemini to access the Google Photos library and fetch relevant images and videos based on the user’s voice commands.

Users can ask Gemini to find specific memories by describing the content they’re looking for. For example, they can ask Gemini to “Find images of me and my wife from our most recent trip to New York,” and the AI assistant will display all the matching memories. The search criteria can include a combination of factors such as date, time, description, location, and people. Additionally, Gemini can identify specific details within photos, such as car registration plates or passport numbers, allowing users to ask questions like “What is my passport number?” or “What hotel did we stay in during our trip to New York?”

When Gemini retrieves relevant memories from the Google Photos library, users can tap on the image or album to open it directly in the Google Photos app. This integration was first previewed at Google I/O 2024 and is currently rolling out to a limited number of Android users in the USA. It is expected to expand to more users and regions in the future.

The Google Photos integration with Gemini aims to make it easier for users to find specific memories without having to manually scroll through their library. By using voice commands, users can quickly access their photos and videos, making it a convenient feature for those with large collections.
