Google is enhancing its cloud storage platform, Google Drive, by integrating it with Google Vids, a video editing tool, to offer users a more streamlined video editing experience. This update builds upon recent improvements to Google Drive’s video functionality.
The integration will introduce a purple Google Vids icon in the top right corner of the Drive interface when an eligible video is opened within specified Workspace domains. Clicking this icon will load the video into Google Vids, providing access to basic cloud-based editing tools. These tools include trimming, adding music, and incorporating text overlays. Edited videos are saved as a new Vids file, necessitating a separate save or export process.
The integration has some restrictions. It supports MP4, QuickTime, OGG, and WebM video formats, with a file size limit of 4GB and a duration limit of 35 minutes. The integration is exclusive to specific Google Workspace domains, excluding free Google Drive accounts. Eligible Workspace domains encompass Business Starter, Standard, and Plus; Enterprise Starter, Standard, and Plus; Essentials; Enterprise Essentials and Enterprise Essentials Plus; Nonprofits; customers with the Gemini Education or Gemini Education Premium add-on; and Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, along with customers who previously purchased Gemini Business or Gemini Enterprise add-ons.
According to Google, users within these eligible domains can anticipate seeing the Google Vids integration within the next 15 days. While the feature is optimized for desktop use, it is expected to function on mobile browsers as well, albeit potentially requiring more precision and attention to detail.
