Google Discontinues Tables Work-Tracking Tool by 2025

Google is discontinuing its work-tracking tool, Google Tables, which competed with Airtable, a popular spreadsheet-database hybrid, and will no longer be supported after December 16, 2025.

Launched in 2020, Google Tables originated from Google’s Area 120 incubator, an internal division focused on experimental projects that aimed to streamline project tracking through automation. Some Area 120 projects eventually became integrated into Google’s core offerings across Cloud, Search, and Shopping.

In 2021, Tables transitioned from beta testing to become an official Google Cloud product. Google positioned it as a potential solution for various applications, including project management, IT operations, customer service tracking, CRM, recruiting, and product development. The app was created by Tim Gleason, a long-time Google employee who later transitioned to a tech lead manager role for NotebookLM before announcing his retirement, effective September 2024.

Area 120 experienced significant changes in 2022 due to a Google reorganization. Half of its projects were canceled, and the in-house R&D division was reduced to half its size, with a renewed focus on AI projects. In 2023, Area 120 was ultimately wound down amid broader company layoffs, with a small number of projects, including Aloud, a tool for auto-dubbing videos, integrated into core Google product areas.

Notably, YouTube launched an auto-dubbing feature in 2023, which became widely available this year. Despite these changes within Area 120, Tables continued as part of the Google Workspace team under Google Cloud. However, the service now faces its own end-of-life date.

Google is advising Tables administrators to export their data either directly to Google Sheets, where they can continue managing workflows using tables and conditional notifications, or to utilize a new migration tool to import their data into Google’s no-code platform, AppSheet. According to Google, the AppSheet solution preserves formatting, such as column types and relationships, and enables workflow management through automations, granular permissions, and Workspace integrations.

Earlier this month, Google announced the closure on the Tables website and directed users to an FAQ. The FAQ highlighted that the Tables team had developed a new data experience within AppSheet to power automated applications and workflows. This alternative, launched in June 2023, allows users to create data models for custom apps and workflows directly within AppSheet.
