The crowdfunding landscape is witnessing a significant shift as Gamefound, a company specializing in crowdfunding for board games, is acquiring Indiegogo, a well-established crowdfunding platform. This acquisition is poised to have a substantial impact on the global creativity and creator empowerment landscape.
The acquisition announcement stated that both Indiegogo and Gamefound will continue to operate as separate entities, ensuring that their respective campaigns and communities remain intact. However, to enhance exposure for Gamefound campaigns, they will now be featured on the Indiegogo platform. This move is expected to provide Gamefound with a broader reach and more significant visibility for its crowdfunding campaigns.
As part of the acquisition, Indiegogo is making immediate changes to its fee structure to align with Gamefound’s model. The platform will now charge a flat 5% fee, eliminating additional charges for promotional placements. This change is likely to benefit campaign creators who will have more predictable expenses. Furthermore, Indiegogo plans to adopt Gamefound’s tipping policy, which ensures that 100% of tips go directly to creators. While the exact timeline for implementing this tipping policy change has not been specified, it is anticipated to be a positive development for creators on the platform.
The primary objective of this acquisition is to integrate Indiegogo’s vast community of 38 million members with Gamefound’s advanced technology. By doing so, the combined entity aims to create a more robust and supportive ecosystem for creators. Following the acquisition, Gamefound CEO Marcin Świerkot will assume the role of Group CEO, while Julie dePontbriand will continue to lead Indiegogo as its CEO, ensuring continuity and stability for the platform.
