Françoise Cadol, the iconic French voice actress for Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider series, has filed a cease-and-desist complaint against Aspyr Media, accusing the company of using artificial intelligence to recreate her voice without consent in the recently released Tomb Raider I-III Remastered collection.
Cadol, who has dubbed the adventurous archaeologist in French for over two decades across multiple titles, discovered the issue after fans highlighted discrepancies in the game’s audio. The controversy erupted following the release of Patch 2 in mid-August, which aimed to restore missing or incorrect voiceover lines in several languages, with a particular focus on Brazilian Portuguese.
Players reported that newly added dialogue, including tutorial instructions for actions like climbing and other movements, sounded unnatural and mechanical. Supporters of Cadol pointed to social media clips where the lines lacked her signature natural inflection and tone, suggesting AI generation rather than archival recordings from her original performances. Cadol expressed deep betrayal in an interview with Le Parisien, stating she felt her most personal asset—her voice—had been digitally imitated without permission or compensation.
Aspyr, the developer and publisher responsible for the remastered collection originally created by Core Design, has remained silent on the matter. A company representative declined to comment when approached by media outlets. The remastered bundle, launched in February 2024, updates the classic PlayStation 1 games from 1997 to 2000, preserving their original aesthetics while enhancing visuals and controls for modern platforms.
The issue has resonated internationally, drawing parallels to similar concerns in Brazil. Lene Bastos, another veteran Lara Croft voice actress who has portrayed the character in Portuguese dubs, shared a video on Instagram addressing fan-submitted clips of suspected AI-generated lines. Bastos confirmed that Aspyr attributed the problem to an external development partner and promised to replace the affected dialogue in an upcoming update, ensuring proper recordings are used moving forward.
This dispute unfolds amid broader industry tensions over AI’s role in entertainment. The SAG-AFTRA strike earlier in 2023 spotlighted the need for safeguards against unauthorized digital replication of performers’ voices and likenesses. Voice actor Ashly Burch, known for roles in games like Life is Strange, emphasized these protections during a temporary suspension of the strike. “Basically you have to get our consent to make a digital replica of us,” Burch told the BBC. “You have to tell us how you’re going to use it, and then you have to compensate us fairly.”
For Cadol, the complaint represents more than a single instance; it serves as a critical test case for how AI is transforming creative labor in gaming. As production increasingly involves outsourced partners and advanced tools, questions of accountability, consent, and fair pay for voice artists are coming to the forefront. The outcome could set precedents for protecting performers’ rights in an AI-driven era, ensuring that iconic voices like Cadol’s remain authentic and respected.
