Is your YouTube Picture-in-Picture feature not working? The Picture-in-Picture (PiP) feature lets you see the video when you open another app or go to your Home page. If you don’t see the mini player, you may need to enable it on your device or app permissions. Here’s what to do if fixing YouTube Picture in Picture issues on your iPhone, iPad, or Android.
Before you start, ensure you have a stable internet connection and your YouTube app is installed. You may need your device password to change system settings.
Follow these eight methods to restore the mini player functionality on your device. Check your device permissions. If iPhone/iPad, open Settings, tap General, then tap Picture in Picture. Toggle on Start PiP Automatically. If Android, open Settings, tap Apps or Apps & notifications, then Special app access. Tap Picture-in-picture, select YouTube, and toggle on Allow picture-in-picture. Open the YouTube app. Tap your profile picture in the top right corner. Tap the gear icon (⚙️) to access Settings. Tap Playback. Toggle on Picture-in-picture. Start playing a video in the YouTube app. Switch to another app or return to the Home screen to trigger PiP mode. Do not force close the YouTube app, as PiP requires the app to remain active in the background.
Check if you are in the United States. In the U.S., PiP works for most videos without a subscription (though music videos are excluded). If outside the U.S., you need a YouTube Premium subscription to use PiP. Consider setting your account region to the U.S. as a potential workaround if you have access to a VPN or regional settings. Open YouTube and tap your profile picture to check your subscription status under Purchases and memberships.
Open the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android). Search for YouTube and tap Update if available. Check your device system settings for Software Update (iOS) or System Update (Android) to ensure the OS is current.
Check your operating system. If iPhone/iPad, press and hold the YouTube app icon on the Home screen. Tap Remove App, then Delete App. Redownload it from the App Store. Warning: This will delete any downloaded videos stored locally. If Android, open Settings, tap Apps, then YouTube. Tap Storage and cache and select Clear cache. You can also tap Clear data if necessary. Restart your device completely after clearing the cache to refresh system processes.
Open your mobile web browser (e.g., Chrome or Safari). Go to YouTube.com. Navigate to a video and play it in full screen. Look for the PiP icon (a square inside another square) in the player controls or tap the Home button while the video is playing. The video should pop out into a floating window.
Open the YouTube app. Tap your profile picture, then the gear icon (⚙️). Scroll down and tap About. Tap Send feedback. Describe the PiP issue in detail and tap the send icon.
Pro tip: If you frequently use PiP, consider adding the YouTube PWA (Progressive Web App) to your home screen. It often behaves more consistently than the native app on certain older devices.
If you have successfully enabled Picture-in-Picture, you can now multitask more efficiently while watching content. Try opening your email or messaging apps to see the video float seamlessly above other windows.
If the issue persists, ensure you have checked all permission settings and verified your subscription status. You can also try the desktop version as a reliable alternative while waiting for an app update from YouTube.
