Elon Musk’s X and xAI have initiated legal action against tech giants Apple and OpenAI, alleging anticompetitive collusion in a move that escalates the ongoing feud between Musk and Sam Altman.
The lawsuit claims that Apple is attempting to protect its smartphone monopoly by integrating ChatGPT into its systems through a partnership with OpenAI, a leading developer of generative AI chatbots. This legal challenge is the latest development in the conflict between Musk and Altman, which has been brewing for some time.
Musk, a former co-founder and co-chair of OpenAI, has previously taken legal action against the company to prevent its transition to a for-profit entity and even made an unsuccessful $97.4 billion bid to acquire it. The tension between Musk and OpenAI has been evident in recent weeks, with Musk publicly accusing OpenAI and Apple of anticompetitive practices on X earlier this month.
Musk’s statement on X claimed that it is “impossible for any AI company besides OpenAI to reach #1 in the App Store,” highlighting his concerns about the competitive landscape in the AI sector. The partnership between Apple and OpenAI, announced in June, is expected to bring new features in December, although neither company has commented on the lawsuit as of press time.
