Blackmagic Design has announced DaVinci Resolve 20.1, a significant update to its DaVinci Resolve Studio software, enhancing support for editing spatial videos, following the launch of the URSA Cine Immersive camera last year.

The URSA Cine Immersive camera utilizes a double-lens system to record stereoscopic 3D videos. The initial DaVinci Resolve update allowed editors to manipulate clips with pan, tilt, and roll functions for viewing on both 2D monitors and Apple Vision Pro. DaVinci Resolve 20.1 expands these capabilities with advanced masking features, enabling users to exclude unwanted objects from immersive shots. It also streamlines the workflow for converting immersive images to flat compositions, facilitating patching, painting, and the addition of graphics or text.

Key new features in DaVinci Resolve 20.1 include export presets for Apple’s Immersive Video Utility, allowing direct drag-and-drop of final renders to Vision Pro. A new ProRes bundle option is now available for workflows integrating Apple Compressor. The update also introduces native support for Apple’s Spatial Audio Format (ASAF), enabling immersive sound mixing through Fairlight’s full 3D panner system.

Additional features in DaVinci Resolve 20.1 for macOS include support for Apple Vision Pro immersive video workflows, the ability to monitor immersive video in Apple Vision Pro directly from the timeline, and support for monitoring Apple Spatial Audio in binaural with head tracking for AirPods. The update facilitates editing of Blackmagic RAW Immersive video from the URSA Cine Immersive camera and includes an immersive video viewer for 2D screens with image pan, tilt, and roll. It automatically recognizes Apple Immersive Video (left and right eye) for dual-file stereoscopic 3D content, offers an option to bypass transitions typically rendered by Apple Vision Pro, and allows for the export and delivery of native files for Apple Vision Pro viewing.

The DaVinci Resolve 20.1 update is available free of charge for existing DaVinci Resolve Studio users. Sample immersive clips are also accessible for download from Blackmagic Design’s official website.
