Crystal Dynamics Announces Layoffs Amid Business Shifts

Crystal Dynamics, the renowned developer behind the Tomb Raider franchise, has announced a round of layoffs citing “evolving business conditions” as the reason, though the exact number of affected employees remains undisclosed.

In a statement released on LinkedIn, the company explained that the decision was “necessary…to ensure the long-term health of our studio and core creative priorities in a continually shifting market.” This move comes after Crystal Dynamics was acquired by Embracer Group in 2022, a company that itself underwent significant restructuring and layoffs in 2023.

Despite the current layoffs, Crystal Dynamics has assured that the development of the new Tomb Raider game will continue uninterrupted. The studio had previously been involved in another high-profile project, assisting The Initiative with the reboot of Perfect Dark. However, that project was canceled earlier this year, and The Initiative was subsequently shut down as part of a broader wave of cuts at Microsoft.

While the cancellation of Perfect Dark and the shutdown of The Initiative may have had implications for Crystal Dynamics, it remains unclear whether these events directly contributed to the recent layoffs. Nonetheless, the studio’s decision to undergo restructuring highlights the challenges faced by game developers in an ever-changing market.
