Creating a TXT file on a Mac is a straightforward process using the built-in TextEdit application, ideal for coding and writing without special formatting.

Before starting, ensure you have access to a Mac computer. To create a new TXT file on your macOS device, follow these steps.

First, open TextEdit, which can be found in the Applications folder within Finder or by using Spotlight Search by pressing Cmd + Spacebar, typing “textedit,” and clicking TextEdit when it appears.

Then, click “New Document.” By default, new documents are often in Rich Text format, so you will need to change this if you haven’t already altered your TextEdit preferences.

To change the format, click the “Format” tab located at the top of your screen, and then click “Make Plain Text.” Alternatively, you can press Shift + Cmd + T on your keyboard.

Next, enter your text by beginning to type the content you wish to include in your document.

After entering your text, save your document by going to “File” > “Save” or by pressing Cmd + S to save the file as a .txt file.

A pro tip for frequent users is to set Plain Text as the default format for all new documents in TextEdit. To do this, go to “TextEdit” > “Preferences” from the top menu, then in the “New Document” tab, select the radio button next to “Plain text.”

Once you’ve created your TXT file, you can use it for various purposes such as writing code, jotting down quick notes without formatting, or preparing text for web content.

These files are highly portable and compatible across almost all operating systems and text editors, making them a universal choice for simple text storage.

Consider organizing your TXT files into specific folders for different projects or types of notes to maintain a tidy workspace and make it easier to locate your plain text documents when needed.
