Are you overwhelmed by the number of unread emails on your iPhone? Fortunately, you can clear an overwhelming unread email count on an iPhone by marking messages as read in bulk without having to open each message.

Before diving into the methods, ensure you have an iPhone with iOS, the Mail, Gmail, Outlook, or Yahoo Mail apps installed, and an internet connection for web-based steps.

To clear unread emails on your iPhone by marking them as read, follow the appropriate method below to select all messages in your chosen mailbox and mark them as read in just a few taps.

Method 1 involves using the Mail app. To do this, open the Mail app on your iPhone. Tap the iCloud (or your mail service name) at the top-left to go to the Mailboxes screen. Tap All Inboxes to work with every account; if you don’t see this option, tap Edit at the top-right, select All Inboxes, then save. Alternatively, you can select a specific inbox by tapping the desired inbox in the left-hand menu. Tap Edit in the upper-right corner to enable selection mode. Then, tap Select All in the upper-left corner to highlight every email. Tap Mark in the lower-left corner to open the action menu, and choose Mark as read to mark all selected messages as read.

Method 2 utilizes Gmail in a web browser. Start by opening a web browser and going to Gmail. Log in to your Gmail account if prompted. Request the desktop version of the site by tapping the Share icon (box with an upward arrow) in the upper-right and selecting Request Desktop Website (or similar). Open the desired inbox (Inbox, Promotions, Social, etc.) by tapping the ☰ menu icon if needed. Tap the top-most checkbox to select all visible emails. Tap the ⋮ (three-dot) button to open the dropdown menu, and choose Mark as read to mark the selected messages as read.

For users of the Outlook app, Method 3 is available. Open the Outlook app; if it isn’t installed, download it from the App Store. Tap the ☰ menu icon in the upper-left and select the inbox you want to clean. Long-press any email to enter selection mode. Tap Select All in the upper-left corner to highlight every message. Tap the open-envelope icon at the bottom of the screen to mark all selected emails as read.

Method 4 is for Yahoo! Mail app users. Open the Yahoo! Mail app; install it from the App Store if it’s missing. Long-press an email to activate selection mode. Tap the checkmark icon in the upper-left corner to select all messages. Tap Mark as read (the fourth option at the bottom) to mark every email as read.

As a pro tip, after marking messages as read, you can archive or delete them in bulk to keep your inbox tidy and improve performance. Reducing the number of unread emails helps you focus on the messages that truly need attention, preventing important communications from being buried. Keeping your inbox organized also speeds up the Mail app’s loading time and reduces battery usage, giving you a smoother iPhone experience.
