Anthropic is previewing an update for its chatbot, Claude, enabling it to generate charts and diagrams as part of its responses, broadening its explanatory capabilities with visual aids for complex concepts.
The feature directly competes with recent updates from rival OpenAI and targets a wide user base, aiming to improve utility for both free and paid subscribers. Claude can create visuals either when directly asked or when it determines they would be helpful to the user. Anthropic clarified that the tool is not image generation; the chatbot produces visual aids using HTML code and XML vector graphics.
For example, the update allows Claude to demonstrate how to fold a paper plane step-by-step, a task previously limited to text. The company likens the capability to giving the chatbot access to its own whiteboard. The feature is available to all Claude users, including those on free subscriptions.
Anthropic stated the release is beta software and may exhibit quirks. The feature is not yet available on mobile devices. This release occurs just days after OpenAI updated ChatGPT to generate interactive visuals for science and math concepts.
