OpenAI’s ChatGPT is expected to reach 700 million weekly active users this week, showcasing the AI chatbot’s sustained rapid expansion. According to Nick Turley, OpenAI VP and head of ChatGPT’s app, this milestone follows the app’s achievement of 500 million weekly active users by the end of March.
Turley also noted that the app’s user base has grown fourfold since last year, highlighting the significant growth trajectory of the platform. The app’s popularity surged in March with the introduction of an enhanced image-generation feature powered by the GPT-4 model.
OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap reported in early April that over 130 million users had generated more than 700 million images within days of this feature’s launch, underscoring the feature’s impact on user engagement. ChatGPT has also experienced substantial growth in its subscriber base, with Lightcap confirming that the service now has 5 million paying business users.
This represents an increase from 3 million in June, demonstrating the platform’s ability to attract and retain paying customers. According to a report from market intelligence firm Sensor Tower, users engage with ChatGPT for an average of over 12 days per month, trailing only Google and X.
The report further indicated that in the first half of 2025, users spent an average of 16 minutes daily on the application, highlighting the platform’s ability to maintain user engagement over time.
