If your current alarm sound is too jarring or simply doesn’t wake you up effectively, you’re in the right place. This guide will show you that changing your alarm ringtone on Android is a simple process that can significantly improve how you start your day.

Before you start, for more sound options, you can download new ringtones from third-party apps like Zedge. For enhanced features, consider installing the Google Clock app from the Play Store.

You can easily set a new alarm sound by following the steps for your phone’s built-in Clock app or by using the Clock app made by Google.

To change the alarm sound using the default Clock app, first open the Clock app, which usually has an icon that looks like a clock. The app’s appearance may vary slightly across different Android models. Tap the Alarm tab, typically located in the lower-left corner, to see your list of alarms. Select an existing alarm to edit, or tap the + icon to create a new one. Tap on the Alarm Sound option to view the available tones. Choose a ringtone from the list. You can also use sounds from third-party apps that you have already downloaded to your device. Tap the ringtone you want to use. You can adjust the volume with the slider at the bottom of the screen. If a sound file you downloaded is not in the list, tap the + icon to browse your phone’s storage and select it manually. Tap the back arrow twice to return to the main alarm settings screen. Tap Save to confirm your changes.

Alternatively, you can change the alarm sound using the Google Clock app. First, download and open the Clock by Google app from the Google Play Store if it’s not already installed on your phone. Tap the Alarm tab in the bottom-left corner to view your saved alarms. Tap the alarm you wish to edit, or tap Add to set up a new alarm. Select the option with the bell icon, which may be labeled Default or Ringtone, to see your sound choices. Choose the alarm tone you want to use. You can also connect to a music service you subscribe to, such as Spotify, YouTube Music, Pandora, or Calm. To use a personal audio file, tap the + icon to browse your device and set it as your custom ringtone. Your selection is saved automatically once you tap it. Before exiting, ensure the toggle switch next to your alarm is enabled, which is usually indicated by it being colored.

Many Android Clock apps offer a “Gradually increase volume” setting. Enabling this feature can help you wake up more gently instead of being startled by a loud, sudden sound.

The sound that wakes you up sets the tone for your entire morning. A jarring, unpleasant alarm can immediately put you in a state of stress, while a sound you enjoy can ease you into the day more peacefully. Taking a few moments to customize your alarm is a small act of self-care that can have a big impact on your mood and productivity.

Furthermore, using a sound that is distinct and effective for you can help prevent you from sleeping through it. Over time, you can become desensitized to a default alarm tone. Switching to a new song, a favorite quote, or a more pleasant sound ensures your alarm remains effective at getting you up on time.
