Call of Duty is set to introduce Black Ops Royale, a new free game mode, on March 13, offering a standalone battle royale experience distinct from the current Warzone integration.
The new mode will feature 100 players dropping in as four-person teams on the massive Avalon map. Gameplay in Black Ops Royale focuses on scavenging and upgrading weapons from Black Ops 7, excluding standard Warzone features like loadouts, the gulag, and buy stations.
This launch marks the franchise’s return to a standalone battle royale experience, targeting players seeking a distinct gameplay loop focused on looting and weapon progression. The mode draws direct inspiration from the series’ first battle royale attempt, Blackout.
The mode pays homage to Blackout, the series’ first battle royale from CoD: Black Ops 4, incorporating reimagined features from that title. These include weapon handling and bullet drop mechanics adapted for modern Warzone players. An open-ended perks system allows for play style customization, referencing the original Call of Duty battle royale mechanic.
According to the team’s announcement, the mode will reintroduce specific mechanics from the Blackout era, updated for the current Warzone engine and player base. The development team stated that the design prioritizes core looting and combat over integrated Warzone systems.
Black Ops Royale launches as a free addition to the Call of Duty ecosystem, operating independently of the main Warzone playlist. The Avalon map serves as the exclusive environment for these matches.
