ByteDance Pauses Global Launch of AI Video Model

ByteDance has halted its plans to globally launch its AI video model, Seedance 2.0, amid concerns over intellectual property raised by Hollywood studios, according to a report by The Information.

The decision to pause the global launch follows the model’s initial release in China in February. ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, had originally planned to release Seedance 2.0 globally in mid-March. However, this release is now delayed due to the intellectual property concerns.

The controversy surrounding Seedance 2.0 began when brief videos generated by the model, including a clip depicting Tom Cruise fighting Brad Pitt, circulated online. The circulation of these videos drew criticism from Hollywood studios, which subsequently issued cease-and-desist letters to ByteDance. Disney’s lawyers were particularly vocal, accusing ByteDance of a “virtual smash-and-grab of Disney’s IP.”

In response to the backlash, ByteDance stated that it would introduce stronger intellectual property safeguards. The company is now working to address the potential legal issues raised by the studios before proceeding with the global launch of Seedance 2.0.
