Microsoft’s extensive layoffs, affecting around 9,000 employees globally, continue to impact its subsidiary companies, including Blizzard, where approximately 100 developers have lost their jobs, according to Aftermath reports.
The significant reduction in Blizzard’s workforce has led to a crucial decision regarding the future of its mobile tower defense game, Warcraft Rumble. Blizzard has announced a substantial shift in the game’s development strategy. Although the game will not be entirely abandoned, Blizzard will cease creating new content. In a public statement, the company clarified that it will continue supporting Warcraft Rumble with updates focused on regular, systemic in-game events and bug fixes, but no new content will be added.
Blizzard further elaborated on its decision, acknowledging that Warcraft Rumble “struggled to find its footing relative to our ambition for its long-term success.” Despite efforts by developers to incorporate player feedback, Blizzard conceded that this “ultimately wasn’t enough to put the game on a path to sustainability.”
Warcraft Rumble, launched in 2023 after a nine-year development cycle, was a significant milestone as the first mobile-focused title within the Warcraft Universe. It was one of two mobile games Blizzard was developing, with the other being a “Pokémon Go”-inspired project that was never officially announced and was canceled in 2022. Warcraft Rumble now joins other Blizzard titles, such as Starcraft II and Heroes of the Storm, in a state of development stasis.
This news follows Xbox’s recent announcements regarding game cancellations, including Rare-developed Everwild and the Perfect Dark remake. Xbox also confirmed the closure of The Initiative, the studio responsible for the Perfect Dark remake, highlighting a broader trend of restructuring within Microsoft’s gaming divisions.
