Apple’s CarPlay Gets Call Handling Upgrade This Fall

Apple’s CarPlay is slated to receive a significant update this fall with iOS 26, introducing an improved solution for handling incoming phone calls, addressing a long-standing issue where calls would hijack the display.

Previously, in iOS 18 and earlier versions, an incoming phone call would take over the entire CarPlay screen, preventing users from seeing anything else until they answered or declined the call. This often created a dilemma, particularly during crucial navigation moments where continuous access to Maps was essential.

With iOS 26, CarPlay will feature a new compact view for incoming calls, allowing users to see who is calling and decide whether to answer without obscuring the entire display. The incoming call banner will appear at the bottom of the screen, minimizing interruption to ongoing navigation or other displayed information.

This “compact view” for CarPlay mirrors a change introduced to the iPhone in iOS 14, where incoming calls transitioned from full-screen takeovers to a less intrusive banner at the top of the display. For CarPlay users, this change is expected to significantly improve the driving experience, especially for those who frequently receive calls while navigating.

The update aims to provide a more seamless and less disruptive way to manage communications while ensuring access to vital driving information remains unhindered.
