A new report from TrendForce indicates that Apple is projected to launch its inaugural foldable iPhone in the second half of 2026, a device tentatively named the iPhone Fold.
This highly anticipated device is rumored to feature a 7.8-inch internal foldable display complemented by a considerably smaller 5.5-inch cover screen. This projection aligns closely with a previous leak in February, which suggested a 7.74-inch foldable panel and a 5.49-inch outer display.
The alleged compact size of the external screen positions the rumored iPhone Fold more in line with devices such as the original Pixel Fold or the OPPO Find N2, both of which were recognized for their smaller cover displays. While this design choice might enhance one-handed usability, it could simultaneously lead to a reduction in quick-access functionality for users. Notably, this 5.5-inch cover display would be smaller than the 5.8-inch outer screen of the first-generation Pixel Fold and significantly smaller than the 6.5-inch display featured on Samsung’s latest Galaxy Z Fold 7.
Beyond the display specifications, other rumored details suggest that Apple may prioritize practical features in its foldable offering. These include a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, potentially as an alternative to Face ID, and a dual 48-megapixel camera system. Furthermore, a custom titanium-and-liquid-metal hinge is anticipated. This specialized hinge is expected to contribute to the device’s durability without adding significant weight, a crucial factor for foldable form factors.
Regarding pricing, conflicting reports have emerged, and with over a year remaining until the projected launch and a volatile international trade environment, the final price remains highly speculative.
Despite the current lack of concrete details, expectations for Apple’s entry into the foldable smartphone market are already exceptionally high and are expected to escalate further as the launch date approaches. By the second half of 2026, Apple will be under considerable pressure to deliver a device that not only meets but exceeds these elevated consumer and industry expectations.
