OpenAI has announced GPT-5, its newest model for ChatGPT, which will soon be integrated into Apple Intelligence, enhancing the company’s AI capabilities across several functions in the near future.
Initially, ChatGPT integration within Apple Intelligence, available on iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia, and visionOS 2, will utilize OpenAI’s GPT-4o model. However, Apple has confirmed that the more advanced GPT-5 model will power ChatGPT integration with the upcoming releases of iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS Tahoe 26. These software updates are anticipated to launch next month, bringing the benefits of GPT-5 to Apple Intelligence users promptly.
The integration offers three primary functionalities: Siri access to ChatGPT for a wider range of queries, including those involving photos and documents; the ability to use ChatGPT with Writing Tools to compose text or images from descriptions; and enhanced visual intelligence for identifying objects and places through Camera Control. This multifaceted integration is set to significantly enhance user experience.
Apple emphasizes user privacy with this integration. When accessing ChatGPT through Apple Intelligence, user IP addresses are obscured, and OpenAI is prevented from storing requests. If a user chooses to link their OpenAI account with Apple Intelligence, OpenAI’s standard data-use policy will apply. This approach underscores Apple’s commitment to protecting user privacy.
Beyond the ChatGPT integration, iOS 26 is set to introduce new Apple Intelligence capabilities, such as Live Translation for real-time interpretation in FaceTime, Phone, and Messages, and significant upgrades to Visual Intelligence, a system-wide tool for content interaction. Apple is also making its on-device foundation model accessible to developers, fostering the creation of more intelligent applications. These advancements reflect Apple’s ongoing efforts to enhance its ecosystem with cutting-edge technology.
In addition to the GPT-5 announcement, OpenAI also revealed two open-weight large language models, one of which is compatible with Apple silicon Macs, and has implemented changes aimed at promoting healthier ChatGPT usage. This move highlights OpenAI’s commitment to expanding its capabilities and improving user interaction with its models.
