Apple Releases HomePod Software Update with New Features

Apple has released HomePod software version 26, the latest update for its HomePod and HomePod mini smart speakers, alongside major operating system launches including iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS Tahoe.

The update introduces three key enhancements aimed at improving music playback, AirPlay functionality, and network connectivity. The standout addition is Crossfade support for Apple Music on HomePod devices. According to Apple’s release notes, “Crossfade on HomePod smoothly transitions between songs by fading out the currently playing song while fading in the next so the music never stops.” This feature, previously available on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, brings HomePod closer to parity with other Apple platforms, especially as iOS 26 introduces the new AutoMix feature for Apple Music.

Another improvement enhances AirPlay integration. Users who frequently stream audio to HomePod via AirPlay can now leverage Siri more effectively. Specifically, when playing content on one HomePod, Siri on that device can be asked to transfer playback to another HomePod speaker in the same home, streamlining multi-speaker setups.

A less publicized but practical update appears in the Home app: manual Wi-Fi network selection. Beta testers had spotted this option earlier, and it’s now live with version 26. Previously, HomePod automatically connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the user’s iPhone or iPad, with no option for manual changes. This new capability allows users to explicitly choose the network, offering greater flexibility in multi-network environments.

In addition to these features, Apple states that the update includes various bug fixes and stability improvements to enhance overall performance. While HomePod 26 represents a modest update compared to the broader OS releases, it signals ongoing refinements for Apple’s smart home ecosystem.

Looking ahead, anticipation builds for further developments, including the potential HomePod mini 2 launch later this fall and rumors of a HomePad or HomePod Touch device arriving next spring, which could spur more substantial software advancements.
