Apple is introducing a significant update to its Podcasts app, enhancing its functionality with the integration of HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) video technology, marking a substantial improvement over its previous video streaming formats.
The update allows users to seamlessly transition between watching video content and listening to audio, thanks to HLS. This technology also introduces a horizontal full display option, enriching the user experience. Moreover, HLS enables the download of both video and audio content for offline viewing, a feature that was not available with the app’s previous RSS-like feed method, which limited offline access.
Another notable enhancement is the addition of picture-in-picture support on iPad, facilitating multitasking. The app is also designed to automatically adjust picture quality to ensure smooth playback, whether the user is connected via Wi-Fi or cellular networks. While HLS is introduced as a new distribution option alongside the existing RSS feeds, it is particularly advantageous for content that is video-first, offering a more robust and flexible viewing experience.
This update is currently in beta testing and is slated for a wider release this spring as part of the iOS 26.4 and iPadOS 26.4 updates, bringing these enhancements to a broader audience.
