Apple Music is set to introduce a new feature that allows record labels and distributors to flag content generated or assisted by artificial intelligence during the upload process.
The move is aimed at increasing transparency regarding the use of AI in music, which could have implications for content identification and user interaction. According to a report by Music Business Worldwide, Apple informed its industry partners of the change in a newsletter distributed on Wednesday.
The new metadata tags will enable distributors to specify if AI is involved in a song’s artwork, track, composition, or music video. This adds to the current metadata fields, which typically include information such as song title, album title, genre, and artist name.
The system relies on labels or distributors to manually opt-in to flag their use of AI. This approach is also being implemented by Spotify, while other platforms, such as Deezer, are developing in-house AI-detection tools. However, accuracy remains a challenge for these systems.
By introducing this new feature, Apple Music is taking a step towards greater transparency in the music industry, particularly with regards to the use of AI-generated content.
