Apple Expands into Robotics and Home Security Systems

Apple is reportedly expanding its focus into robotics, home security, and smart displays, leveraging artificial intelligence in a strategic move to diversify its hardware and software ecosystem. A new report from Bloomberg highlights Apple’s ambitious plans, particularly in the smart home security sector, positioning it directly against established brands like Amazon’s Ring and Google’s Nest.

Central to Apple’s home security strategy is the development of a comprehensive system of smart home cameras and related products. Building on earlier reports of a home doorbell with Face ID support, the company is now detailed to be working on a battery-powered home security camera designed for extended operation, potentially lasting “from several months to a year on a single charge.” This device is expected to feature “facial recognition and infrared sensors to determine who is in a room.” Apple foresees these cameras being deployed throughout homes to facilitate automation, such as controlling lighting or personalized music playback based on occupancy and user identification.

The report indicates that Apple intends to “develop multiple types of cameras and home-security products as part of an entirely new hardware and software lineup.” While specific launch timelines for these security products remain undisclosed, they signify a direct challenge to the market dominance of Ring and Nest.

Beyond home security, Apple is also advancing its work on a table-top robot device, described as an “iPad mounted on a movable limb that can swivel and reposition itself to follow users in a room.” This robotic venture is targeting a 2027 launch. Additionally, development continues on a smart home display product, which is slated for release in mid-2025.
