Amazon’s new AI will buy anything for you

Amazon’s new “Buy for Me” feature uses agentic AI to handle purchases on third-party sites, offering a streamlined checkout experience without leaving the Amazon mobile app, currently in testing for a select group of US users on iOS and Android.

The “Buy for Me” button lets you purchase products from other websites directly through the Amazon app, powered by Amazon’s Nova AI system, which includes a new model capable of performing actions within your browser, along with Anthropic’s Claude.

Where previously Amazon would direct users to other brands’ websites for products it didn’t sell, the “Buy for Me” feature automates the process by handling payment and shipping details for the user.

Tapping on an item that supports “Buy for Me” displays product details within the Amazon app, and pressing the button leads to an Amazon checkout page to verify payment information.

Amazon then uses AI to securely transfer encrypted name, address, and payment details to finalize the checkout process on the brand’s website; the company stated they cannot view previous or separate orders from third-party sites.

Order tracking is available directly through Amazon, with customer service and returns managed through the original third-party brand’s site; third-party companies can opt out of the program.

Amazon spokesperson Lara Hendrickson clarified that Amazon does not take a cut of purchases made via the “Buy for Me” button, emphasizing the experimental nature of the feature to help customers find and seamlessly purchase more products.

“Buy for Me” is being tested with a limited number of brands and products, however, Amazon plans to expand it in the future.
