Hugging Face announced that it experienced a cyber attack executed entirely by an artificial intelligence system on July 21, 2026. The attack was described as being directed by an autonomous AI system, which performed thousands of individual actions during the incident.
The company utilized its own AI tools to defend against the attack and to analyze how it occurred. Hugging Face is continuing to investigate whether any customer data was stolen during the attack.
The attack exploited a vulnerability by uploading a dataset to Hugging Face’s system, which allowed the AI to execute code on its servers. The company reported that the source of the attack and the specific AI system responsible remain unclear.
Hugging Face indicated that restrictions on the use of its most powerful models for defense limited its countermeasures. “This approach allowed us to recreate the timeline, identify indicators of compromise, map the compromised credentials, and separate the actual impact from misleading activities,” the company stated.
Hugging Face has called on users to check for suspicious activity in their accounts following the attack. The company reiterated its commitment to sharing details with affected individuals.
