Americans frequently engage with Google’s AI about government, health, money, and legal issues, despite spending less time on these subjects in their daily lives. This finding comes from Google’s AI & Economy ATLAS, a report developed by researchers at Google and Google DeepMind. The report analyzes 14.65 million interactions from the Gemini app, AI Mode in Search, and the Gemini API, focusing on non-work-related conversations.

According to the report, citizens ask about government services and civic obligations at a rate nearly 20 times higher than the time they spend on those activities. This includes inquiries related to licenses, taxes, fines, and voting. The report highlights that AI conversations significantly diverge from daily activities.

Professional and personal care services, which include discussions about doctors, lawyers, banks, and salons, followed with a gap exceeding seven to one. Education inquiries also show a notable gap of nearly six to one. Consumer purchases are raised approximately three times more often than the time spent on shopping.

Conversely, subjects related to physical activities, such as eating and drinking, are discussed much less frequently in AI conversations. Americans dedicate about 18 times more time to eating and drinking than the AI inquiries on the topic. Other activities like travel, sports, and household care also show a lower frequency of AI-related discussions.

The report reveals that while people engage in conversations about various activities, the most pronounced gaps occur in areas like health, money, legal issues, and shopping. Google previously shared data indicating health, food, and travel among the top subjects queried in AI Mode. However, it remains unclear whether these inquiries drive traffic to websites, as the report does not include click data.

This analysis provides insights into how Americans utilize AI for specific inquiries relative to their daily activities, revealing a complex relationship between time spent and conversation topics.
