Adobe updates Project Indigo with new AI features for enhanced mobile photography

Adobe announced new AI-powered features for its experimental iOS camera application, Project Indigo, on July 21, 2026. The application, released last year, provides professional controls, multi-frame super resolution, and various shooting modes. The latest update introduces a photo critique system that analyzes composition, lighting, colors, and emotional impact, offering users feedback and improvement suggestions.

Users can receive specific shooting and editing suggestions, including tips on framing, exposure, and object adjustments. The application also allows direct removal of unwanted objects from photos, such as people and clutter, utilizing AI technology. Users can specify which objects to remove by text, with the application successfully eliminating them while minimizing AI errors.

Additionally, the update includes a style transfer feature that enables users to transform photos into various artistic styles, such as watercolor and ink. Adobe employs Google’s Gemini-based “Nano Banana” infrastructure for these new features but remains open to integrating other models, including its own Adobe Firefly model.

Through Project Indigo, Adobe aims to enhance mobile photography by making it more accessible and educational. The company emphasizes that these AI tools are designed to guide users rather than automate the creative process.

The update also introduces experimental camera controls and image processing technologies, leveraging computational photography techniques to extend the hardware limitations of mobile devices. Key features include multi-frame merging, advanced noise reduction, and more natural color production.

Adobe’s initiative reflects a strategy to integrate generative AI into the creative process from the moment a photo is taken, rather than just during the editing phase. The company aims to transform mobile photography into a more accessible and instructional experience through Project Indigo.
