OpenAI and Oracle are collaborating to construct one of the largest data centers in the United States in New Mexico. This development comes amid a significant environmental crisis in the state, where tree mortality has increased threefold in the past year.

In 2025, New Mexico reported that 209,000 acres of forests were decimated due to bark beetle infestations and other factors. The state is experiencing unprecedented levels of tree die-off, which raises concerns about the ecological impact of large-scale data infrastructure.

The partnership aims to leverage Oracle’s cloud infrastructure alongside OpenAI’s artificial intelligence capabilities. This data center is expected to create numerous jobs and provide a substantial boost to the local economy.

According to environmental studies, the increasing tree mortality in New Mexico is attributed to climate change and prolonged drought conditions. The state has faced challenges in forest management, which has exacerbated the situation.

OpenAI and Oracle have not disclosed the expected completion date for the data center. However, they have committed to implementing sustainable practices to mitigate environmental impacts.

As the construction progresses, stakeholders will monitor both the economic benefits and environmental repercussions of this large-scale project in a region grappling with severe ecological challenges.
