Huawei announced that HarmonyOS PC models can now run Linux-based tools and applications directly due to the introduction of the Converged Development Engine, version 1.0.0.17, available in the HarmonyOS PC AppGallery preview zone.
This development marks a significant expansion for Huawei’s self-developed operating system, enhancing opportunities for developers to utilize Linux environments without complex configurations.
The Converged Development Engine allows the HarmonyOS PC to execute Linux-based tools and services directly. This feature opens avenues for customized workspaces that operate on the Linux operating system.
Following installation, developers can utilize various features, including a Shared Folder for data exchange, Snapshot Backup for data security, and Disk Expansion to alleviate storage constraints.
Huawei described the Fusion Development Engine as a lightweight virtualization environment, enabling smooth Linux development comparable to native applications. “No complicated configuration is required. It starts with a single click, allowing developers to directly run Linux environments,” a company representative stated.
Linux environments within this context include not only the traditional tools and utilities but also full home screen interfaces and OS functionalities such as GNOME and KDE, along with command-line setups for servers.
