How to Manually Update Your Android Device

Are you looking to install the latest version update on your Android phone? While your Android will typically update automatically, you can speed up the process by manually updating as soon as an update is available.

Before you start, ensure your device is charged, connected to Wi-Fi, and back up your device. Updating your device may require sufficient storage space and could result in data loss if the device fails to update, so it’s essential to back up your data before proceeding.

To manually check and update your Android version, follow these steps. First, make sure you’re connected to Wi-Fi by swiping down from the top of your Android’s screen and looking for the Wi-Fi icon; if it has a slash through it, tap it to enable Wi-Fi before continuing.

Open your Android’s Settings, where you will receive notifications when updates are available, and you can also manually check. Scroll down and tap “About Phone,” then tap “Android version” to see your Android version, security update, and Build number.

Next, scroll down and tap “System,” which is near the bottom of the menu next to the “info” icon that resembles a lowercase “i” in a circle. Tap “System updates,” which is next to the image that resembles a smartphone with an arrow pointing down on the screen.

If an update is available, it will say “System update available” at the top of the screen. Tap “Download and Install” at the bottom of the screen to update your phone. If no update is available, you’ll see a message that says, “This device is up to date.”

If you receive the notification “not enough space available,” you’ll need to free up space on your Android device. You can delete unused apps by uninstalling them in the Google Play Store or clear your App Cache by going to Settings → Storage & USB → Cached data.

After addressing any storage issues, or if the update process was interrupted, reboot your Android. You can perform a standard restart by pressing and holding the Power button and tapping “Restart.” Alternatively, you can perform a forced shutdown by pressing and holding the Power button and Volume Down button until the screen shuts off in about five seconds, then press the Power button to turn it back on.

Retry the update by following the steps again. If an update begins downloading but doesn’t finish, your device will try again within the next few days. Ensure your phone is at least 75% charged to have enough battery life to complete the update.

As a pro tip, avoid updating over cellular data to prevent additional fees on your monthly bill, and keep an eye on your storage to ensure a smooth update process. After updating your device, explore the new features and improvements that come with the latest Android version, and take some time to familiarize yourself with any changes to settings or functionalities that could enhance your user experience.

Additionally, ensure that your apps are updated as well to maintain compatibility with the new Android version. Frequent updates can help improve performance, security, and access to the latest features.
