Apple has acquired MotionVFX, a developer of plug-ins and templates for its Final Cut Pro video editing software, in a move expected to strengthen its competitive position against Adobe Premiere Pro.
The acquisition is expected to integrate MotionVFX’s professional-grade tools into Apple’s services. MotionVFX announced its integration with Apple on its website, stating its mission is to “continue to empower creators and editors.”
MotionVFX said its mission over 15 years has been to create “world-class, visually inspiring content and effects for video editors.” The company cited “quality, ease of use, and great design” as shared values with Apple.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Apple did not respond to TechCrunch’s request for comment regarding the acquisition.
Warsaw-based MotionVFX, founded in 2009, offers subscription packages for its video editing tools starting at $29 per month. Apple launched its Creator Studio subscription bundle in January. The bundle costs $12.99 per month or $129 per year.
Creator Studio includes access to Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, and Pixelmator Pro across Mac and iPad, along with Motion, Compressor, and MainStage on Mac. It also provides premium content for Keynote, Pages, and Numbers.
The acquisition of MotionVFX is aimed at attracting more subscribers to Apple’s Creator Studio bundle. Apple’s services business contributed over 26% of its total revenue in the last fiscal year, up from 8.5% in 2015.
