OpenAI Developing New Code-Hosting Platform to Rival GitHub

OpenAI is reportedly developing a new code-hosting platform to rival Microsoft’s GitHub, according to The Information, marking a significant competitive move against a key investor and partner.

The project is currently in its early stages and is unlikely to be completed for several months, Reuters reported, though it could not independently verify the details. This potential new platform would directly challenge Microsoft, which holds a substantial stake in OpenAI. If successfully launched, it would not only be a bold step against a major investor but also offer an alternative for developers who have faced service disruptions on GitHub.

According to The Information, citing a person familiar with the project, engineers at OpenAI experienced an increase in service disruptions that made GitHub unavailable in recent months. This prompted the decision to develop a new code-hosting platform. Employees have also considered making the code repository available for purchase to OpenAI’s existing customer base, potentially expanding its offerings.

Neither OpenAI, GitHub, nor Microsoft immediately responded to requests for comment on the report. The Information was the first to break the news.

OpenAI’s latest funding round valued the company at an impressive $840 billion, with participation from major players including Big Tech firms and SoftBank’s Masayoshi Son in a $110 billion raise. This significant investment signals continued confidence in AI technology despite recent concerns about a potential valuation bubble.
