X has announced a significant policy change to its revenue sharing program, suspending creators who post AI-generated videos depicting armed conflicts without disclosing AI involvement. The new policy was announced by Head of product Nikita Bier on March 3.

Under the new policy, creators who violate the rules will face penalties, with first-time offenders losing revenue sharing privileges for 90 days. Repeat offenders will be permanently removed from the program, ensuring that the platform maintains the authenticity of information during armed conflicts and prevents manipulation of the revenue sharing program.

The policy specifically targets monetized creators and AI-generated videos of armed conflicts, excluding general AI content or non-monetized accounts. This focused approach aims to prevent the spread of misleading content that could deceive viewers about real-world events. Violations will be identified through Community Notes or by detecting metadata from generative AI tools, highlighting X’s efforts to stay ahead of the evolving AI landscape.

Bier emphasized the necessity of this change “during times of war,” noting that the U.S. has not formally declared war since 1942. The current conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran has not been legally declared a war, underscoring the complexity of the geopolitical situation. The rapid advancement in AI video quality has made it increasingly challenging for viewers to distinguish between synthetic and real footage.

X has already implemented measures to watermark images and videos generated by its Grok chatbot. However, the platform had not previously required users to disclose AI-generated content. To address this, X is testing a broader AI labeling toggle for posts containing synthetic content, although a timeline for its implementation has not been shared, according to Social Media Today.

As a social media platform owned by Elon Musk, X’s revenue sharing program pays creators based on engagement metrics. The new policy takes effect immediately, demonstrating X’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of its platform and ensuring that creators adhere to the rules.
