Meta Tests AI Shopping Tool for US Users

Meta has initiated an experimental AI shopping tool test for select users in the United States on desktop browsers, signaling its entry into the competitive AI-driven e-commerce market.

The feature aims to streamline product discovery by integrating search and recommendation capabilities directly into the Meta AI interface. This development follows similar moves by rival technology companies, indicating a growing trend in the industry.

Eligible users are presented with a “Shopping research” button inside the query text box on the Meta AI web platform. Upon requesting product suggestions, the chatbot displays a carousel containing images, pricing, links to e-commerce sites, and brand information. Notably, Meta AI includes a short explanation for why it recommended each item, providing users with a clearer understanding of the suggestions.

The system tailors responses using user information such as gender and location data. For instance, a tester profile based in New York received a selection of women’s puffer jackets from shops that ship to that location, as reported by Bloomberg. Although users cannot check out within the interface, they can click links to complete purchases online, facilitating a seamless shopping experience.

Meta has confirmed the test but has not announced a wider release date. Mark Zuckerberg told investors during an earnings call earlier this year that Meta is launching agentic shopping tools, aligning with the company’s broader strategy. Rival companies, including OpenAI, Google, and Perplexity, have launched similar features, underscoring the competitive landscape.

Meta is a technology company focused on social media and AI development. Bloomberg reported on the company’s confirmation of the test, providing insight into Meta’s latest innovation.
