Apple has unveiled its latest M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, designed to power the new MacBook Pro with significant boosts in AI compute and graphics performance.

The new chips are a result of Apple’s innovative “Fusion Architecture,” which combines two dies into a single system on a chip. This design is expected to offer substantial improvements in performance for professional workflows.

The M5 Pro and M5 Max feature an 18-core CPU, consisting of six “super cores” and 12 “performance cores.” According to Apple, this configuration enhances performance by up to 30 percent for pro workloads, making them ideal for demanding tasks.

The GPU in these chips contains up to 40 cores, with each core equipped with a Neural Accelerator. Apple claims that the M5 Pro and M5 Max offer over 4x the peak GPU compute for AI compared to the previous generation, significantly advancing AI capabilities.

Graphics performance has also seen a notable boost, with applications using ray tracing experiencing up to a 35 percent increase in performance compared to the M4 Pro and M4 Max. Additionally, the chips include higher unified memory bandwidth to support the enhanced AI features.

The new MacBook Pro, powered by the M5 Pro and M5 Max, is available for pre-order starting March 4 and will be available on March 11. Meanwhile, the base M5 chip will be used in the new MacBook Air, as stated by Apple.

The M5 Pro and M5 Max provide an advanced GPU with Neural Accelerators and higher unified memory bandwidth, further solidifying Apple’s position in the high-end laptop market with its latest silicon iteration.
