Discover how to uncover hidden messages on your iPhone, whether they’re filtered texts from unknown numbers or deleted messages you’re trying to recover, with these simple steps.
There are several ways to find hidden messages on your iPhone. This guide will walk you through accessing the Unknown Senders folder, checking your recently deleted items, and restoring older messages from iCloud backups.
Before you start, ensure your iPhone is running a recent version of iOS and that you have your Apple ID credentials available if you plan to restore from iCloud.
Restoring from an older iCloud backup will erase all data added after that backup date, including newer apps, photos, and messages. Proceed with caution to avoid permanent data loss.
Follow these methods to find messages that are filtered, deleted, or hidden in other apps.
To view messages from unknown senders, open the Messages app on your iPhone, tap the Filters icon in the top-left corner of the inbox, and select Unknown Senders to view texts from numbers not in your contacts.
You can keep messages from this sender in your main inbox by tapping the message, then tapping Mark as Known, and tapping Add to save the number to your contacts or link it to an existing contact.
To stop filtering unknown senders entirely, go to Settings > Apps > Messages and toggle off Screen Unknown Senders.
To check recently deleted messages, open the Messages app, tap the Filters icon at the top-left, and select Recently Deleted. Messages here remain for 30 days. Select the messages you want to restore and tap Recover.
To restore messages from an iCloud backup, verify your messages are backed up by going to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Messages and ensuring Use on this iPhone is turned on.
Then, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone, tap Erase All Content and Settings, and choose Don’t Back Up when prompted to back up your data. Backing up now will overwrite your previous backup and permanently delete the texts you want to recover.
If you have an eSIM, ensure the option to erase it is not selected to avoid reactivation issues. Follow the setup prompts until you reach the Transfer Your Apps & Data screen, select From iCloud Backup, and sign in with your Apple ID.
Choose a backup date from before you deleted the messages, wait for the restore process to complete, and then open the Messages app to find your recovered texts. If this fails, you may contact your mobile carrier to request message records.
To find unread messages from notifications, open the Messages app and look at the top of your inbox for messages with a blue dot next to the sender’s name. These represent messages received while notifications were swiped away or ignored.
To check third-party messaging apps, check your home screen for apps like WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram, Discord, Facebook Messenger, LINE, or Instagram, and open these apps to see if the messages you are looking for exist there instead of the native Messages app.
If you are trying to monitor a specific conversation, check both the native Messages app and the most popular third-party apps, as users often split their communication across multiple platforms to maintain privacy.
If you successfully recovered your messages, consider reviewing your notification settings to ensure you don’t swipe away important alerts in the future. You can customize notification styles under Settings > Notifications > Messages to make sure you never miss a text again.
If you were unable to find the messages using these methods, it is likely they have been permanently deleted or overwritten. Going forward, ensure that iCloud Messages is enabled so that your message history is synced across all your Apple devices, providing a safety net in case of accidental deletion.
