Google has unveiled Nano Banana 2, also known as Gemini 3.1 Flash Image, a cutting-edge image generation model that produces more realistic images at a faster rate than its predecessor.

Nano Banana 2 builds upon the high-fidelity characteristics of its predecessor, Nano Banana Pro, while significantly improving image generation speed. The model supports a wide range of resolutions, from 512px to 4K, and various aspect ratios, making it versatile for different media creation needs. It can maintain character consistency for up to five characters and fidelity for up to 14 objects in a single workflow, enabling complex requests and enhanced storytelling capabilities. This results in media with more vibrant lighting, richer textures, and sharper details.

The new model will become the default for image generation in the Gemini app’s Fast, Thinking, and Pro modes. It will also be integrated across all apps in the Gemini suite, including the video editing tool Flow, and in Google Search results via Google Lens and AI Mode, across 141 countries on the Google app and web. Users subscribed to Google AI Pro and Ultra plans will have the option to continue using Nano Banana Pro for specialized tasks by regenerating images via the three-dot menu.

For developers, Nano Banana 2 is available in preview through various Google tools, including the Gemini API, Gemini CLI, Vertex API, AI Studio, and the Antigravity development tool released in November 2025. This accessibility is expected to foster innovation and integration of the model into various applications.

To address concerns about AI-generated content, all images created with Nano Banana 2 will be embedded with a SynthID watermark, indicating their AI origin. These images will also be interoperable with C2PA Content Credentials, a standard supported by major industry players such as Adobe, Microsoft, Google, OpenAI, and Meta. Since its launch in November 2025, SynthID verification in the Gemini app has been used over 20 million times, underscoring the importance of content authentication.
