Spotify Rolls Out AI-Powered Prompted Playlist Feature

Spotify has rolled out its AI-powered “Prompted Playlist” feature to Premium subscribers in several new countries, following initial testing and launches in other regions.

The feature, now available in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and Sweden, allows users to create custom playlists by describing specific themes, moods, or scenarios in their own words. Prompts can reference a wide range of elements, including musical eras, genres, activities, lyrics, instruments, or inspirations from TV shows, movies, and personal milestones.

To use the feature, users tap “Create,” select “Prompted Playlist,” and enter a prompt in English. They can also specify whether they want the playlist to include mostly new music or tracks from their existing library. Once a prompt is submitted, Spotify’s AI generates a playlist based on the user’s listening history and current music or cultural trends. Each song in the playlist includes a short explanation regarding its selection.

Users can refine their playlists by adjusting the prompts or scheduling auto-refreshes on a daily or weekly basis. The feature remains in beta, and Spotify notes that usage limits are currently in place. Some users have reported hitting these limits after submitting approximately 20 to 30 prompts.

This rollout is part of Spotify’s broader push into AI-driven features. The company has recently introduced other innovations, including Page Match, which allows users to scan a physical book page to jump to the corresponding spot in an audiobook, and an update to lyrics that provides global translations and offline access. Additionally, SeatGeek partnered with Spotify last week to surface concert ticket links and tour dates within the app.

Internally, Spotify is heavily investing in AI. Co-CEO Gustav Söderström stated earlier this month that the company’s top developers have not written code since December due to the focus on AI implementation. Furthermore, Spotify is expanding into new areas, with U.S. and U.K. users soon to be able to buy physical copies of books directly from the app.
