Old GPUs are hot again as gamers ditch NVIDIA

Gamers are pivoting to older GPUs, likely spurred by high prices and spotty availability of NVIDIA’s RTX 5000 series, resulting in a reshuffling of the sales charts. The $459.98 MSI Ventus NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 8 GB is now Newegg’s best-selling GPU.

The Gigabyte AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT OC 16 GB closely follows the RTX 4060 on Newegg’s charts, with the Gigabyte AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT in third place. The ASUS TUF Gaming RTX 5070 OC is the sole RTX 5000 series GPU in the top-selling GPUs on Newegg, landing in eighth place at $739.99, with no other RTX 5000 series GPU appearing in the top 20.

Steam’s most recent Hardware & Software Survey for March 2025 paints a different picture beyond just Newegg sales. Although adoption of the RTX 5000 series is slow, with the RTX 5080 being the only one to appear on the chart with 0.19% growth, gamers may be moving away from the RTX 4000 series. The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650, released six years ago, had the most growth during the last Steam Survey.

AMD is also seeing increased adoption in the Steam Survey. Reports from Japan indicate AMD has gained traction since the RX 9070 series launch, with claims of a 45% market share after NVIDIA held 90% in December of the previous year. Gamers are increasingly feeling that NVIDIA focuses more on AI, leaving gaming cards with insufficient VRAM for high resolutions and refresh rates which is affecting their buying decisions.
