Sony Closes Bluepoint Games Studio in March

Sony is set to close Bluepoint Games, the studio behind the remakes of Shadow of the Colossus and Demon’s Souls, with the closure expected to result in around 70 job losses in March.

The decision to shut down the studio was attributed to a “recent business review,” according to Sony. In a statement to Bloomberg, the company expressed its appreciation for Bluepoint Games, saying, “Bluepoint Games is an incredibly talented team and their technical expertise has delivered exceptional experiences for the PlayStation community. We thank them for their passion, creativity and craftsmanship.”

Bluepoint’s most recent major project was the co-development of God of War: Ragnarok with Sony Santa Monica in 2022. Following its release, the studio was reportedly tasked with developing a live-service game set within the God of War universe. However, this project was cancelled in 2025, alongside another game from Bend Studio.

Sony had acquired Bluepoint Games in 2021, recognizing the studio’s expertise in remaking and remastering classic PlayStation games as a valuable asset. The closure of Bluepoint Games follows a series of challenges faced by Sony in its pivot towards live-service publishing. The company had previously shut down the servers for the multiplayer shooter Concord just two weeks after its release and subsequently closed Firewalk Studios, the developer behind the game.

Despite these setbacks, some Sony studios continue to explore live-service mechanics. Guerilla Games recently announced an online co-op game set in its Horizon universe, and Bungie’s extraction shooter Marathon is scheduled to launch in March.
