ChatGPT Plus, the paid tier of the popular AI assistant, is now free for a limited time to college students in the US and Canada. OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, announced that eligible students can access ChatGPT Plus at no cost until the end of May.
This promotion aims to increase adoption among college students as they prepare for final exams. OpenAI is highlighting ChatGPT’s capabilities for summarizing study materials, creating quizzes, brainstorming with research abilities, and its advanced Voice mode, enabling natural conversation.
To claim the offer, visit the dedicated page on ChatGPT’s website and tap “Claim Offer.” You will be redirected to SheerID, a verification platform, where you will need to fill in details such as your school or university’s name and student email ID. If your college isn’t listed, you can submit a request form.
Alternatively, Perplexity AI, a competitor to ChatGPT, is offering one free month of subscription to students, with the opportunity to earn up to 24 additional months for referring peers.
Successful applicants will have free access to ChatGPT Plus until May 31. Users should be aware that OpenAI’s terms & conditions state a $20 charge for the next billing period starting June 1. It is recommended to cancel the subscription a few days in advance, as it will remain active until the end of the period.
While intended to aid students in assimilating information, the free subscription allows users to explore a wide range of applications beyond academics. This includes creating art, writing code, or various other projects.
