OpenAI has started accepting app submissions for review and publication within ChatGPT, a concept introduced earlier this year during its DevDay event, allowing developers to extend ChatGPT’s capabilities.
These apps enhance ChatGPT conversations by providing additional context and enabling user actions such as ordering groceries or converting outlines into slide decks. To assist developers, OpenAI has released several resources including best-practice guides, open-source example apps, an open-source UI library, and a step-by-step quickstart guide. These materials are based on lessons learned since DevDay.
Users can now access an app directory directly inside ChatGPT, reachable from the tools menu or at chatgpt.com/apps, allowing them to browse featured apps or search for published ones. Developers can use deep links to direct users to their app’s page in the directory.
After connecting to an app, it can be triggered in conversations via an @ mention of its name or by selecting it from the tools menu. OpenAI is experimenting with methods to surface relevant apps during chats using signals such as conversational context and user preferences, and users can provide feedback on these suggestions.
Developers build ChatGPT apps using the Apps SDK, currently in beta, which supports chat-native experiences integrating context and actions directly into ChatGPT. Successful apps focus on specific user intents and deliver value by completing real-world workflows or enabling AI-native experiences.
OpenAI recommends reviewing the app submission guidelines early and provides further documentation and examples in the developer resource hub. Submissions require details on various aspects including MCP connectivity and country availability settings, and developers can track approval status through the OpenAI Developer Platform.
The first batch of approved apps will roll out gradually in the new year, with those meeting OpenAI’s quality and safety standards qualifying for publication in the app directory. Apps gaining user traction may appear more prominently or receive recommendations from ChatGPT.
In this initial phase, developers can include links to their websites or native applications to handle transactions for physical goods. OpenAI is exploring further monetization options for digital goods and plans to provide updates based on feedback.
All developers must adhere to OpenAI’s guidelines on safety, privacy, and transparency, ensuring apps comply with usage policies and respect third-party terms of service. Every submission must include a clear privacy policy, and developers can only request essential data.
When users connect to a new app, OpenAI discloses the types of data shared with the developer and presents the app’s privacy policy. Users retain full control and can disconnect from an app at any time, revoking its access.
OpenAI encourages developers to consult the app submission guidelines and utilize the developer resource hub for comprehensive documentation. Approved apps aligning with quality and safety criteria become eligible for the app directory and potential featuring by ChatGPT.
