Anthropic is launching Claude Code in Slack, enabling developers to delegate coding tasks directly from chat threads, available Monday as a research preview.
This beta feature enhances Anthropic’s existing Slack integration by introducing full workflow automation. Developers, previously limited to lightweight coding assistance such as snippet writing, debugging, and explanations, can now tag @Claude in Slack to initiate a complete coding session. Claude uses the Slack context, including bug reports or feature requests, to determine the appropriate repository, post progress updates in threads, and provide links for work review and pull request creation.
This integration signifies a broader industry shift where AI coding assistants are moving from Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) into collaborative tools. Cursor offers Slack integration for code drafting and debugging in threads, while GitHub Copilot recently incorporated features for generating pull requests from chat. OpenAI’s Codex is accessible through custom Slack bots.
Slack aims to become an “agentic hub” where AI integrates with workplace context, potentially shaping software team operations. The AI coding market is becoming increasingly competitive, with differentiation relying more on integration depth and distribution than solely on model capability. Anthropic has not yet confirmed a broader rollout date for Claude Code.
The integration also presents considerations regarding code security and intellectual property protection. It introduces an additional platform for managing and auditing sensitive repository access. Furthermore, new dependencies are created where outages or rate limits in either Slack or Claude’s API could disrupt development workflows previously managed locally.
