Glass is a handy item to have in Minecraft, and it’s super easy to make with sand and a furnace. In this guide, we’ll show you exactly how to make this helpful resource.

Before you start, ensure you have access to sand from shorelines, fuel such as coal or charcoal, cobblestone for crafting a furnace if needed, and a crafting table.

To craft glass and stained variants in Minecraft, follow these steps to smelt sand into glass and create colored versions using dyes.

For crafting basic glass, fill a furnace with fuel by putting coal, charcoal, dried kelp, or any other fuel source into the bottom slot. If you don’t have a furnace, craft one by arranging eight cobblestone blocks in a ring on a crafting table. Collect sand from shorelines around your Minecraft world and place a stack of it in the upper slot of the furnace. Take the resulting glass from the output slot once the smelting is complete.

For the stained glass recipe, place eight glass blocks around a single unit of dye in the center of a crafting table. Choose the dye color based on your desired glass shade; sources include beetroot or poppy for red, orange tulip for orange, dandelion for yellow, sea pickle for lime, cactus for green, pitcher plant for cyan, blue orchid for light blue, lapis lazuli or cornflower for blue, a mix of red and blue dyes for purple, allium or lilac for magenta, peony or pink tulip for pink, a mix of black and white dyes for gray, azure bluet or white tulip for light gray, bone meal for white, cocoa beans for brown, and ink sac or wither rose for black. Surround the dye completely with the glass blocks to produce eight stained glass blocks.

To craft glass panes, place six glass blocks in the bottom two rows of a crafting table. Collect the sixteen glass panes that result from this arrangement.

Glass has other uses as well. You can craft glass bottles for potion brewing by arranging three glass blocks in a “V” shape on a crafting table to make three bottles. To fill a glass bottle with water, hold it in your quick-slot bar and use it on any body of water source. You can also build a beacon for stat boosts by placing three obsidian blocks on the bottom row of a crafting table, a nether star in the center, and glass blocks in all remaining slots; obtain the nether star by defeating a Wither and obsidian by letting water contact a stationary lava pool. Additionally, you can create daylight sensors for redstone contraptions with glass blocks in the top row, nether quartz in the middle row, and wooden slabs in the bottom row on a crafting table. Furthermore, you can assemble end crystals to respawn the Ender Dragon using glass blocks surrounding an eye of Ender in the middle row and a ghast tear below it, specifically with glass across the top row, glass-eye of Ender-glass in the middle, and glass-ghast tear-glass in the bottom.

Always smelt extra glass while you have the furnace running, as it’s a versatile building material that allows light to pass through without mobs spawning inside. Mastering glass production opens up creative possibilities for transparent builds like greenhouses or underwater bases, enhancing both aesthetics and functionality in your world.

Stained glass adds color and style to structures, while items like beacons provide powerful gameplay advantages such as speed or strength buffs within their range. Glass panes offer efficient window solutions without wasting blocks, and bottles are essential for advanced alchemy. Overall, these recipes turn simple sand into tools that elevate survival and creativity.
