If you’re looking to refresh your YouTube presence, changing your profile picture is a simple yet effective step. Here’s how to update your profile picture using your iPhone, iPad, Android device, or computer.

Before you start, ensure you have a YouTube account and are logged in to your associated Google account. This is a prerequisite for making changes to your YouTube profile.

To update your YouTube profile picture, you can follow one of two methods, depending on whether you’re using the mobile app or a computer.

For mobile app users, the process is straightforward. Open the YouTube app, which is represented by a white play button in a red square. If you’re not already logged in, enter your email address and password to log in. Tap your current profile picture located at the bottom-right corner, then tap “View channel” on the right of your YouTube handle. Next, tap the pencil icon on the right side of your bio, next to “Manage videos” and the “Analytics” icon. Tap your current profile picture again, and a camera icon will overlay it. You can then choose to either “Choose from your photos” or “Take a photo.” Select a new photo, reposition or zoom if needed, and tap “Save.” Your new profile picture is now set.

If you want to change your banner as well, you can tap your current banner and follow the same steps to add a new picture.

For computer users, the process is equally simple. Go to YouTube in a web browser and log in if necessary by clicking “Sign In” in the upper-right corner. Click your current profile picture at the top-right corner of the page, then click “View your channel” underneath your YouTube handle. Next, click “Customize channel” at the top of the page, next to your profile picture. A new page will open where you can click the “Branding” tab, which sits between “Layout” and “Basic info.” Click “Change” to the right of your profile picture, select a new profile picture from your image files, and click “Open.” Reposition or zoom as needed, then click “Save” to apply the new picture. You can also upload a new cover photo by clicking “Upload” next to “Banner image” and choosing a photo.

A pro tip to keep in mind is to use a high-resolution image that’s at least 800×800 pixels to ensure your profile picture looks sharp and professional across all devices.

Updating your profile picture on YouTube is more than just a cosmetic change; it helps create a strong personal brand that viewers can easily recognize. A fresh, relevant image makes your channel more approachable and professional, encouraging subscribers to engage with your content. It also reflects your current style or topic focus, keeping your presence consistent as your channel grows.

Beyond aesthetics, a well-chosen profile picture can boost click-through rates on recommendations and search results. Think of it as your digital handshake—first impressions count, and this simple change can make your videos stand out in a crowded platform. Regularly refreshing it keeps your channel feeling active and up-to-date.
