Enable Read Receipts on Android Messaging Apps

Most Android users can now turn on read receipts, a feature that allows you to see if a text you sent has been read, provided both parties are using modern Android devices with RCS-enabled messaging apps.

To utilize this feature, both the sender and recipient must be using modern Android devices with a messaging app that supports RCS (Rich Communication Services) format, have RCS-enabled texting apps, and have read receipts turned on. This functionality does not work with SMS or iMessage on iPhones and requires an internet connection.

To enable read receipts on Android, users can follow specific steps depending on their preferred messaging app. For Google Messages, the process involves opening the app, tapping the profile picture or initials in the upper-right corner, and then navigating to Messages settings > RCS Chats. Here, users need to toggle “Turn on RCS chats” to the on position (indicated by a blue switch) and then toggle “Send read receipts” to on. After sending a text message while connected to the internet, the status of the message can be tracked: a single check mark indicates the message was sent to the server, two check marks mean it was delivered to the recipient’s device, and colored circles signify the message was read.

For Samsung Messages, users should open the app, tap the three-dot menu icon in the upper-right corner, and go to Settings > Chat settings. Toggling “Share read status” to the On position enables read receipts. When a message is read, the word “Read” along with a timestamp appears, providing clear feedback on message status.

It is advisable to ensure that the recipient also has read receipts enabled in their messaging app to facilitate seamless tracking of read status for both parties. Enabling read receipts enhances the texting experience by providing real-time feedback, which is particularly useful in professional or personal communications where timing is crucial.

This feature promotes accountability in conversations and can help reduce misunderstandings by allowing users to follow up more effectively or adjust their expectations based on whether their messages have been read. Overall, read receipts make digital interactions more reliable and intuitive for Android users.
