OpenAI has announced a series of updates for its AI-generated video application, Sora, which has been the top-ranked app on the App Store in the U.S. and Canada since its launch in late September.
The forthcoming changes, as revealed by Sora head Bill Peebles on X, will introduce video editing tools, new social features, and the ability for users to create character “cameos” of pets and other objects. A key feature is the expansion of cameos, which allows users to generate AI personas from a reference video. This update will let users create cameos of their pets, a “favorite stuffed toy and pretty much anything else.” These AI characters can then be shared for others to use in their own video creations.
To help with discovery, the app’s interface will be changed. “We’re expecting people to register lots of crazy new cameos with this feature. To make them easier to find, we’re updating the generation UI to show the latest trending cameos in real time,” Peebles wrote on X. Sora will also receive basic video editing capabilities, beginning with a tool to stitch multiple clips together. The company plans to add more editing tools over time.
Additionally, an updated social experience is being developed to provide new ways of using Sora with friends. These could include dedicated channels for specific universities, companies, and sports clubs. OpenAI is also addressing user feedback by working to reduce what some have described as excessive moderation of generated content. Efforts are also being made to improve the overall performance of the application.
While the Sora app is currently available for pre-registration on the Google Play Store, an official launch date for the Android version has not been announced. Peebles indicated it should go live “soon” but did not provide further details. The company also confirmed that an Android version of the app is “actually coming soon.”
The new creation tools are set to be available within the next few days, according to Peebles. With these updates, OpenAI is continuing to enhance the Sora experience, providing users with more creative possibilities and improved functionality.
