Nissan has unveiled a prototype solar panel roof for its Sakura kei electric vehicle, dubbed the AO-Solar Extender, designed to provide additional driving distance and power various accessories.
The AO-Solar Extender system is engineered to function whether the car is in motion or stationary. When fully extended on a sunny day, the panel can generate 500 watts, which is estimated to add approximately 1,864 miles of driving distance annually. In its extended position, the panel also serves as a shade for the windshield, helping to “reduce cabin temperature and lower the need for air conditioning power consumption,” as stated by Nissan.
Even when retracted, as it would be in driving mode, the solar roof is capable of producing 300 watts in sunny conditions and 80 watts in rainy conditions. This output exceeds the 185-watt maximum generated by the solar roof available on the Toyota Prius Prime. Nissan emphasizes that the AO-Solar Extender is designed to minimize aerodynamic drag while integrating with the Sakura’s styling.
The Sakura has been Japan’s most popular electric vehicle since 2022, noted for its range and spacious interior. Nissan plans to launch the AO-Solar Extender accessory commercially, with further details to be announced at a later date. The company will showcase the AO-Solar Extender at the Japan Mobility Show starting October 30, 2025.
