Netflix has announced its commitment to embracing generative AI, announcing it is “all in” on the technology. Netflix is integrating generative AI into its content creation processes for various shows.
The company is leveraging AI for visual effects and pre-production tasks, marking a distinct approach compared to the more cautious stance prevalent within the entertainment industry. For instance, in the series The Eternaut, Netflix employed AI to create a building collapse scene. This method was described as more cost-effective than traditional techniques, highlighting the potential economic benefits of adopting AI in film production.
Additionally, Netflix utilized AI in Happy Gilmore 2 to make characters appear younger, demonstrating the technology’s versatility in enhancing visual elements. These applications are part of a broader strategy to integrate AI throughout its operations, extending beyond content creation to areas such as advertising and personalized recommendations.
To ensure the responsible use of AI, Netflix has established specific guidelines for its production partners. These guidelines require partners to disclose their intended use cases for AI and prohibit the replication of copyrighted material. Furthermore, legal approval is mandatory when AI output includes final deliverables or the likenesses of talent. This policy aims to mitigate potential legal and ethical issues associated with AI-generated content.
